Rumored and talked about for months, it appears that a new Costco will be coming soon to the Illinois Medical District. The Kirkland, WA, retailer has plans to open a new megastore at 1440 S. Ashland Ave. Alderman Fioretti announced at the November
State of the South Loop meeting that the Costco deal was in the works and almost completed.

Costco is the third largest retailer in the U.S., the ninth largest in the world. |
According to today's
Chicago Journal, the cost for construction will be "$48.5 million" and employ up to "125 full-time and part-time positions in retail and management positions."
The new Costco will be approximately 50,000 square feet. In the works since 2007, the Medical District Costco will be the second in the entire city of Chicago. The only current location is at Clybourn and Damen Avenues in Lincoln Park.
What do you think? Does Chicago need another Costco? Is 1440 S. Ashland Ave. a good location for the third largest retailer in the U.S.?
Is this still in the works? I have not heard abput this since last winter.
ReplyDeleteIt's up and running, gas station too.
DeleteNatalie, it's still in the works. It's hard to nail down exact opening dates due to all the city red tape and permitting that goes on. I'm sure will be hearing more soon. The 2nd Ward alderman mentioned it coming at last month's townhall meeting.
ReplyDeleteLooks like it's probably at least a year away since Costco is listing "coming soon" openings thru March 2012 and there's no mention of this location. It only took about 10 years after the south loop Home Depot rumors started before the store actually opened....
ReplyDeleteYou guys are all wrong... It will open late Spring/ Early Summer 2012...
ReplyDeleteJust a helpful hint for you all! ;)
PS it will be 154,000 SQ FT... Not 50,000
Thanks for the update!
ReplyDeleteThe store will open on June 28th.
ReplyDeleteDoes anyone know if there will be gas at this costco? I drive to the Bedford park gas station because gas is usually 40-50 cents cheaper than the city. It's sad that it's worth the drive, but this costco is less than a mile from where I live.
ReplyDeleteDon't know about a gas station at Costco, but we'll see what we can find out.
ReplyDeleteyes, their will be a gas station.
