The Greater South Loop Association (GSLA) and Century 21 SGR will present Jumanji (1995) in Grant Park (near the Logan monument, Michigan and 9th St.). The fantasy stars Robin Williams, Kirsten Dunst and Bradley Pierce.
What’s it about?
A magical board game unleashes a world of adventure on siblings Peter (Bradley Pierce) and Judy Shepherd (Kirsten Dunst). While exploring an old mansion, the youngsters find a curious, jungle-themed game called Jumanji in the attic. When they start playing, they free Alan Parrish (Robin Williams), who’s been stuck in the game’s inner world for decades. If they win Jumanji, the kids can free Alan for good—but that means braving giant bugs, ill-mannered monkeys and even stampeding rhinos!
The film is rated PG. Movie will start at dusk.
Other movies scheduled in the South Loop include the following:
June 27: Rogue One at Daniel Webster Park.
July 10: Raiders of the Lost Ark at Daniel Webster Park
August 16: Zootopia at Cottontail Park.

According to an article in today’s dnainfo, construction to connect Chinatown and Downtown has finnally begun. According to the article, the “Wells-Wentworth Connector” was originally proposed in Daniel Burnham’s 1909 Plan of Chicago. The new roadway will cost $62 million.
What do you think? Will this help ease congestion between Chinatown the South Loop and other north-south roadways?
Every year on a Saturday afternoon in August, King Drive is transformed from a major thoroughfare to a raucous parade route. The Bud Billiken Parade has been a South Side tradition since 1929. Floats anchored by DJs, enthusiastic marching bands, and colorfully costumed drill teams entertain thousands of neighbors as they celebrate the return to school each academic year.
This year’s parade is happening Saturday, August, 13th and is scheduled to step-off at 10 am.
Be sure to bring your appetite. All along the parade route, smoke billows from grills where jerk chicken wings, ribs, and other mouthwatering treats tempt spectators and draw shouts from float passengers. Family picnics line the street as the community cheers on performers and spends an afternoon celebrating. The parade, organized by Chicago Defender Charities, Inc., is intended to promote education; it ends in Washington Park, where the party continues throughout the day.

After falling madly in love with her adopted hometown, Chicago, she wrote a book about it, 100 Things to Do in Chicago Before You Die. Local author Molly Page wants you to enjoy 100 things in Chicago…before you die! Page, a freelance author from the South Loop, has written an insider’s guide—100 Things to do in Chicago Before You Die—to some of the best that Chicago has to offer. Originally from St. Louis, Page has really embraced the city and all it has to offer. A lover of history and architecture, Page has assembled some interesting sites to see and experience. For example, did you know that there is a magic show at the Palmer House Hilton? And have you visited the Alfred Caldwell Lily Pool in Lincoln Park? You’ll also discover the best blues club in the city and it’s probably not the one you’re thinking of right now.
Page has lived in Chicago for five years and has grown to love her adopted city. 100 Things to do in Chicago Before You Die is published by Reedy Press, a publisher specializing in local-interest guidebooks. Armand’s Pizzeria is coming to the South Loop. They’ll be opening shop at 1416 S. Michigan Ave., in the space formerly occupied by City Tavern. There is a sign posted in the window of the old City Tavern, but you can hardly see it due to the way the windows are configured.
Armand’s Pizzeria boasts that they make “Chicago’s Best Thin Crust Pizza.” They’ve been in business since 1956 and have 10 locations in the Chicagoland area, including locations in Wicker Park and Millennium Station.
I'd like to buy a vowel, Pat, so I can read this sign.
The sign says opening soon, but no official opening date has been announced.
With all the controversy surrounding the Lucas Museum, you would think the messaging would be a tad bit better. Now that the Friends of the Parks' lawsuit is proceeding, Mayor Rahm Emanuel is going to “talk things over with his pals George and Mellody” instead of asking the citizens of Chicago, more specifically, residents of the South Loop, what we think.
Whether you’re for or against the museum, it’s worth checking out McGrath’s complete editorial. Click here to read it.
